Condé Nast Traveler | Collegio alla Querce, Auberge Collection

In these days of over-tourism in Florence, there is an increasingly compelling case to be made for choosing a base somewhat removed from the crowded centro storico, especially during the torrid summer months. With the opening of Collegio alla Querce (querce means oak tree), in March 2025 there is a new serious contender to be that base.

The gorgeous property is vast, an imposing building on five levels set in steeply terraced gardens, cut by bay hedges and (for now) rather-too-pristine pathways, and dotted with fledgling cypresses and beds of newly-planted geraniums. On the top terrace lies the biggest pool in Florence at 35 meters; knock-out views take in the city center, Brunelleschi’s cupola included, to the south and that oh-so-familiar timeless Tuscan countryside to the north.

Inside, the generous public areas are filled with natural light (and brilliantly illuminated at night), elegant yet at the same time cozy. Rather than offering an echoing, soulless ambiance, the interior designers—ArchFlorence—have cleverly managed to create a warm and welcoming environment, filled with art (from the owner’s formidable collection), oriental rugs, objects and curiosities, fabulous books. Earthy colors—shades of green, terracotta, blue and cream—reflect the Tuscan countryside; furniture is a mix of custom pieces plus the odd antique.
